As chronic conditions and life expectancy increase, there is a need of a comprehensive index of quality of life of individuals as well as mortality rate. Besides, the need for economic evaluations is being emphasized in order for the efficient use of the limited resources and for evidence-based public health policies. QALY which is used in cost-utility analysis is an important tool for evidence-based policies. In order to calculate QALY, we need value scores for various health status. EQ-5D which was included in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2005 is one of the widely used health-related quality of life measures that are used in economic evaluations. The purpose of this study is to obtain value scores for the 243 health status of EQ-5D that are representative of Korea. This study covers the valuation of health status using the Korean version of EQ-5D and comparisons with the results from similar studies in foreign countries such as U.K., Japan, U.S., etc. We evaluated 17 status out of the 243 status of EQ-5D by time trade-off method. The final sample included 287 individuals. We could obtain a value set for the 243 health status from two random effect models which resulted in the identical value set. The value set comprised of logically consistent and valid 243 value scores. The two random effect models were different from current available foreign models. The study results can be used in cost-utility analyses in the future.
